Food in South West France
The South West of France has an abundance of excellent restaurants catering for most tastes and at all price levels. The following pages list some of our favourites and photos of some of the food on offer can be found in the Gallery.
There are a number of "fast food" restaurants in the area. McDonalds has 2 resturants on the Bergerac ring road and another in Trelissac on the outskirts of Periguex. Kentucky Fried Chicken can also be found in Trelissac.
The French chain restaurant Courtapaille can also be found in Trelissac, selling a variety of char-grilled dishes. Another French chain resturant - Buffalo Grill can also be found in Trellisac, selling mainly steaks and hamburgers.
Most super markets (or hypermarkest) have an associated restaurant and these often sell good quality freshly cooked food at reasonable prices. Our favourite is called "Crescendo", which is at the Intermarche supermarket on the Bergerac ring road. If you fly into Bergerac on your visit, you will pass it en-route to Gite Coquelicot. We often finish our shopping with a lunch there, including a glass of local Rose wine and a cup of Espresso coffee.
As in most parts of France, there are traditional regional dishes. In the Dordogne, duck in all it's forms is the most typical. Signs everywhere advertise the availability of Fois Gras and most restaurants offer Magret d'Canard and Salade Perigordine, with duck and walnuts. Walnuts are another local speciality and there is even a wine made from them!
